ARTIST BIO

Kirill Khabituev is a generative artist and interactive media developer. With a background in music and no formal art training, he found his way into the field through audio-reactive visuals and live performance. Working as a creative coder at a new media studio, he constnantly sharpens his skills with interactive and creative technology, which flows directly into his own work. He co-organized Rhythms&Patterns, a generative and tech art festival. In his work, he enjoys finding the balance between clean digital structures and naturally chaotic forms. What draws him to generative and interactive art is that the work is never static – it keeps reshaping itself through code or human interaction.

What Is one belief, insight, or idea that guides your creative process?

Being curious is something that drives everything that I do. I think it’s very important to always stay curious and try to learn new things and ways things work.

Can you tell us how you discovered generative art and what drew you into it?

Curiosity actually helped me guide my way to generative art. I wanted to switch my bureaucratic office work to something creative. I went through video editing, sound design and motion design to suddenly find myself at a vvvv workshop. That’s when I realised this is it.

What do you think defines your style or creative approach, and how did you arrive at that identity?

I think that I’m still in process of shaping my style but I can say that visually speaking I love finding balance between contrasting artificial direct shapes and flowing naturally chaotic textures. I don’t have any art education so I was shaping my style by constant practice.

How does a project usually begin for you? Do you have a creative ritual or structure you follow?

My process is pretty chaotic but it starts the same way every time: I have some idea that suddenly comes into my mind and I want to try to make it as soon as possible. It can be a new technique that I saw and wanted to test out or some visual or technical concept that I’d like to try to bring to life.

What tools or technologies do you use most, and how do they influence your visual language?

I use TouchDesigner every day both at work and after hours working on my own projects. I like that it allows to prototype almost anything you want pretty quickly and it helps a lot with my sudden ideas.

Do you feel there Is a strong generative art scene? What would you like to see evolve in it

It’s hard for me to evaluate but I’d say yes. And I keep seeing more and more people are getting interested in generative art and creative tech.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to start creating generative art but doesn’t know where to begin?

Definitely to find the tutorial that breaks down some work that you like and try to understand the principles and thinking behind it, plus trying to alter some parts of it to feel the possibilities.

Which artists or creators do you think are doing remarkable work and deserve much more recognition?

SPACEFILLER is the first thing that came into my mind. I simply love how they recreate nature motifs using algorithms and pixel aesthetics. MiniUV also has some mind-blowing generative pieces that helped me fall in love with generative art even more. Also sarv.vj, seohyo, paketa12, I could go on 🙂
