ARTIST BIO

Luka Sladaković has been making psychedelic music (trance and ambient) for around 10 years. A few years ago, he had the idea to create visuals for his music, so he found his visual subject of passion: 3D Fractals. The artist explored all fractal software and went into more real-time and coding explorations. He’s developing Fractal tools, like TouchFractal – a Toolkit for Touchdesigner, Vectron Octane scripts, and more!

What Is one belief, insight, or idea that guides your creative process?

Fractals are geometry of our universe. They are present everywhere you look around. In Nature, Human biology, Cosmos. This exploration is more than just creative process, it’s insight into whole existence here on planet.

Can you tell us how you discovered Mixed art and what drew you into it?

After exploring fractal softwares, like Mandelbulb 3D, Mandelbulber, Fragmentarium, my interest went to more realtime softwares like Unreal Engine and TouchDesigner. Now i’m exploring more and more how can i integrate these visual softwares with my music softwares, Ableton and VCV Rack for Audiovisual creations.

What do you think defines your style or creative approach, and how did you arrive at that identity?

Fractal art is a specific niche. I try to build unique fractal formulas which haven’t been seen a lot, so i’m always in exploration and discovery process of new shapes which people always find intriguing. It looks familiar and alien at the same time. I try always to find new ways of fractal exploration, with tools that have nothing in common with them, and bring always fresh ideas.

How does a project usually begin for you? Do you have a creative ritual or structure you follow?

Sources of inspiration can be found anywhere with fractals. Sometimes i will have a nature walk and be intrigued by plant shape, come home and try to replicate it. On other side i’ve had experience with visions in altered states or meditation, and seen different shapes somewhere existent in subconcioussness field. Music is definitely a big inspiration!

What tools or technologies do you use most, and how do they influence your visual language?

I use mainly TouchDesigner and Unreal Engine, also Blender/Octane. I like to connect different midi controllers, use sensor tracking and explore 3d fractals mostly with very specific equipment. Recently i explore a lot fractal interactivity with Kinect Camera, Motion Leap sensor, AI Web Camera tracking, FPV Drone controllers, PS5 Joystick, etc!

Do you feel there Is a strong generative art scene? What would you like to see evolve in it

Definitely. TouchDesigner community is wonderful and always growing for example! I like to see how people explore new ways of making art which has become possible in recent years with more Real-time approaches! Connecting visuals, music, lasers, lights etc, always intrigued to see when all senses are stimulated with Multimedia art!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to start creating generative art but doesn’t know where to begin?

There’s plenty of resources available online, i’d find a topic i’m interested in and look for all the tutorials or courses available online. There’s a lot of free tutorials to get started on Youtube.

Which artists or creators do you think are doing remarkable work and deserve much more recognition?

Some of 3d fractal artists that are very inspiring to me, but not so known outside of fractal realms. Jorge Abalo (Batjorge), Gary Webb and Mathieu Rousseau
